Self-build projects in England account for 7-10 per cent of new houses built each year (approximately 12,000 new homes), a figure dwarfed by countries such as France (60 per cent) and Austria (80 per cent).
There are many potential barriers to self-building in England including the Planning and Building Regulations processes, lack of financing options and restricted plot numbers. Sarah Chilcott of the Planning Portal has recently written an interesting post on the subject which also looks at planning permission and how this works in relation to self-build.
